Yongzhou in the south of Hunan Province and north to the Nanling Mountains, Yongzhou has tow districts of Zhishan and Lengshuitan, 9 counties of Qiyang, Dong'an, Shuangpai, Daoxian, Jiangyong, Jianghua, Ningyuan, Xintian and Lanshan under its jurisdictions, with a total area of 22,400 sq.kms and population of 5.4 million.
Yongzhou was originally called Lingling, which got famous for the Emperor Shun's dying in Jiuyishan Mountains of Ningyuan on his visit to the south and also named Xiaoxiang for the Xiaoshui River joining the Xiangjiang River here. It is more than 2100 years since Lingling prefecture was set up in 111 B.C.Yongzhou Administrative Office was established instead of Lingling prefecture by the Emperor Suiwen in Sui Dynasty. The hardworking and wise people in Yongzhou created magnificent ancient civilization, especially like Yuan Jie and Liu Zongyuan's classical literature, Huai Su and He Sahaoji's ancient calligraphy and Zhou Dengyi's Li Doctrine, which made notable impacts on the development of Chinese culture and thoughts.
As a tourist place early in ancient times, Yongzhou is very fragrant with natural sceneries and humanitic landscapes. The beautiful mountains of Jiuyishan, Yangmingshan and Shunhuangshan are now the National Forestery Parks. The Wuxi Forest of Steles is China's largest natural collection of stone curlings with high architecture art value. There are other tourist spots like Liuzi Temple and Chaoyang Rock in Zhishan, Yueyan Rock and Lianxi in Daoxian, Zixia Rock and Shun Temple in Ningyuan and Qianjiadong in Jiangyong as the birthplace of Yiao Nationality.
Abundant in natural resources, with a temperate climate, fertile soil and plentiful rainfall, Yongzhou is the main production base of grain, pigs, fruits, tabacco and forests in Hunan. Located in the Nanling Multi¡ªmetal Mineralization Area, she has over 50 kinds of proved minerals, among which manganese covers 1/7 of the reserves of the country and rare earth the richest in mid¡ªsouth China. There are exploitable area of over 5 million mu., hydropower resources of 2.04 million kws and forestry storage capacity of 30 million cu. ms.
Yongzhou is convenient in transportation. With Hunan¡ªGungxi railway acrossing, Luoyang¡ªZhanjiang railway running through in programme, the state highways of No.332 and No.207, Yongzhou¡ªLianzhou highway and the 9 provincial highways crisscrossing in the city, it takes no more than ten hours for people and goods get to Guangzhou, Hongkong and Macao, the distance from Yongzhou to Guangzhou only 400 kms., and the airport is soon to be put into operation.
As a state experimental area for reform and opening and the key area for national agricultural development, Yongzhou has established her industry systems mainly formed by foods, building materials, light industry and textiles, metallurgy and machinery. Area arrangement, scale production, scientific management and intensive farming has made her agriculture transformed from tradition to modernization. The infrastructure of water supply, electricity, highways and telecommunication has been greatly improved. The strategy of opening to make development is being carried out, resulting in the apparent approvement of investment environment and the attraction of more and more foreign investors. There are 200 enterprises with foreign investment in Yongzhou among which Yongzhou Nanjindu Bridge (the first jointly built bridge with foreign funds in Hunan) has opened to traffic, the Songjiazhou Hydropower station (the first jointly buit hydropower station in Hunan) is to began generating electricity at the end of theis year, and the Sino¡ªJapan jointly invested Hunan Changfeng Automobiles Co. is in well operation with its Liebao¡ªMitsubishi cars production lines.
